Rice & Times: "Advancing Asian-American Interests in Media"

EON Member Profile

Alex Chan's Rice & Times

Rice & Times is dedicated to the advancement of Asian Americans by exploring ideas and challenging stereotypes -- from articles to news to interviews, knowledge and education is key to our future prosperity in America

Rice & Times' mission is to advance Asian-American interests in media.  Writes founder Alex Chan: "I believe that the media has been at the root of racism in America. Asian Americans need to gather as a group and discuss the issues that are affecting us today. Although you might be driving a nice car and making a decent wage, mainstream America still view you as a foreigner. We are settling for crumbs when we should be taking a piece of the pie that we helped baked!

"We are not 'Orientals', we are not the 'Model Minority' and we are not a one-dimensional group. So, until the day that we own our piece of the media pie, Rice & Times will continue to advance Asian-American interests."

Main features of this very well designed site include a number of forceful original commentaries by Chan, who used to write for Yolk, as well as interviews with APAs in media and politics, a community discussion forum, community events announcements, and more.

Although professional in its design, Rice & Times is a deeply personal project for Chan, who hails from Los Angeles.  He grew up in predominantly Chinese cities from Chinatown, Alhambra and Monterey Park, and says, "I find it ironic because I can barely speak Cantonese nowadays. It's easy to pick up English when my parents were always working and television was the babysitter.

"The result of growing up in two cultures was that I was never 'American' enough and I was slowly losing my Chinese identity at the same time. I am what I am, a product of my environment. But, what I do possess is a sense of myself and my culture. The main goal of Rice & Times is to stimulate ideas and thoughts within the Asian-American community."

To that end, Rice & Times invites content submissions on a wide range of topics by, for, and about the Asian-American community.  For more information about contributing to the site email contact@riceandtimes.com.
