IMDiversity.com Asian-American Village is proud to host a live video stream of the historic 2008 APIA National Presidential Townhall from the campus of the University of California, Irvine, presented by APIAVote.org.

We salute APIAVote's efforts, and strongly urge members of our communities to be part of this first-of-its-kind election year event even if you cannot be present in Irvine or at a local screening event.  To that end, this space will host a real-time webcast of the event on the afternoon of Saturday May 17.

The stream is scheduled to begin around 8 AM PST, with coverage of the programs throughout the day. The  entertainment program begins at 2 PM and the main Townhall begins at 4 PM.

About APIAVote

APIAVote (APIAVote.org) is a national nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that encourages and promotes civic participation of Asian Pacific Islander Americans in the electoral and public policy processes at the national, state and local levels. APIAVote envisions a society in which all Asian Pacific Islander Americans fully participate in and have access to the democratic process.

AAPIs are the fastest growing minority in the country. With more than 14.4 million Asian Americans and approximately 1 million Pacific Islanders, AAPIs make up more than 5% of the U.S. population.

AAPIs are concentrated in Hawaii, California, Washington, New Jersey, Illinois, and New York, and also within the metro regions of Nevada, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Ohio, Massachusetts, and Louisiana. AAPIs can make possible powerful voting blocs if harnessed and courted.

Nationally, nearly 7 million AAPIs are eligible to vote, and over half are registered, an increase from a 30% registration rate from 1998. Nearly 3 million AAPIs voted in the 2004 elections.
