The Candidates on Immigration: The candidates’ positions on immigration--McCainDear Readers: I have received several inquiries about U.S. presidential candidates' positions on immigration. Over the next few weeks I will comment on those positions. Today's column, the last in the series, will focus on the views of Senator John McCain.Answer: The centerpiece of McCain's immigration policy
is securing the United States borders. He believes the citizenry has
lost faith in the government's ability to make the borders secure, and
he pledges to do so should he become President. For McCain, tight border
security includes increased entry and exit mechanisms, as well as
effective screening of cargo at all ports. McCain believes that
immigrants coming to live in the United States should assimilate into
the culture and learn English, American civics and to respect the values
of our democratic society. Senators McCain and Kennedy previously
sponsored a bill in Congress which called for the legalization of
qualified undocumented immigrants with a path to citizenship. McCain
hopes that the United States will always be that "shining city upon a
hill," and a "beacon of hope and opportunity" for those who come here to
work hard.
